It might seem like a "luxury" problem, but discovering our passion can be challenging. When I sold my company and was "free," I struggled to fill my time with something meaningful and felt a sense of emptiness. Once our basic survival needs are met, we have the opportunity to choose where to direct our energy. However, making this choice isn't always straightforward.
I remember feeling envious of musicians or artists who were consumed by their passion, while I sat at home not knowing what to do with myself. What helped me was letting go of the judgment I placed on myself for not pursuing something "big" or extraordinary with my time. It's okay to slow down and engage in whatever comes naturally in the moment. I realized that if I am present while doing whatever I was doing, the specific activity didn't matter as much.
Once I let go of those judgments, I found joy in "regular"activities- sport, a chat with a friend, a walk with my dog or playing the piano. I even began to appreciate time itself, and being able to choose how to use it.
I've always had an affinity for writing and kept a journal, so I decided to delve deeper into this interest, which eventually led to the creation of my book. Sometimes, our passions don't announce themselves loudly, instead, they require careful listening to learn what brings us meaning and joy.
I was writing my book during the pandemic, and felt a desire to connect with people. I recognised a wish to support others, and decided to pursue coaching. I never would have guessed that coaching would become my passion, but through trying different things and paying attention to what excites me, I stumbled upon it.
Do you know what drives you and your passion is?
